1981-2000: Professor of Anesthesia and Pediatrics at the University of
California San Francisco. I performed numerous phase I-IV clinical trials, conducted
independent research funded by the National Institutes of Health, and assisted
the Food and Drug Administration (as a reviewer for both primary and secondary
NDA's and as a member of special committees). I also reviewed grants for the
National Institutes of Health and other organizations, tutored the NONMEM
course and the Workshop on Advanced
Methods in Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics, and was a member of the
Editorial Board of the journal Anesthesiology.
2000-2003: Vice President of Medical Affairs and Medical Director, DURECT
Corporation, Cupertino, California. I was the sole physician in a startup pharmaceutical
company that focussed on the development of extended-release products using
Alza's DUROS technology and the SABER technology developed by Southern Biosystems
(a DURECT subsidiary).
